Understanding your body constitution, choosing suitable foods to regulate your body and mind, and maintaining its balance to avoid the occurrence of diseases, is key to achieving a "disease prevention" lifestyle.

Understanding your body constitution

In Chinese medicine, the body constitution is defined into nine types. In order to distinguish one’s own constitution, one must choose the most suitable way to balance your body. The main characteristics of the various body constitution are listed below:

NEUTRAL TYPE

The body is well-proportioned, hair is thick, lip color is rosy, energetic, sleeps well, and usually less sick.

The tongue is pale red in color with a thin white coating.

 Remedy suggestion: You are doing good. Keep it up and stay balanced.

 QI DEFICIENT TYPE 

Muscle is flabby, voice is low and weak, prone to have shortness of breath, dizziness, or forgetfulness. Often feel tired, sweat easily, prone to catch colds. Takes a long time to recover after illness.

The tongue is pale red in color with tooth marks on the sides.

Normal or loose stools.

 

Remedy suggestion: Avoid greasy, raw, and cold foods; consume foods that can tonify spleen qi, such as ginger, lotus root, yam, red dates, etc.

YANG DEFICIENT TYPE

Tend to have a thicker body type, sensitive to low temperature, cold hands, and feet, prefer warm and hot food, susceptible to discomfort after drinking cold drinks or eating cold food. Lack of energy and excessive sleep. Easy to catch a cold in winter.

The tongue is pale and bulky.

Prone to diarrhea.

 

Remedy suggestion: Avoid raw cold foods; eat more warm and tonic foods, such as lamb, black beans, ginger, etc. and always keep warm.

YIN DEFICIENT TYPE

Tend to have long and thin body shape, often feel hot in the hands and feet, easy to flush cheeks or face fever, dry mouth, and throat, dry eyes, like cold drinks, prone to insomnia. Sensitive to the heat or dry weather.

The tongue is red and dry.

Prone to have a dry stool.

 

Remedy suggestion: Avoid spicy food; consume more sweet and moisturizing foods, such as pears, black fungus, white fungus, etc.; staying up late and vigorous exercise should be avoided.

PHLEGM & DAMPNESS TYPE

Tend to be overweight especially in the abdomen area. Face oily, excessive sweat and phlegm, often feel heavy and sleepy, water retention, like to eat fatty food and desserts. Sensitive to high humidity environments.

The tongue is fat and large, with a thick and white coating

Normal or slightly loose stool

 

Remedy suggestion: Avoid sweet, indigestible, and greasy food; consume more foods that invigorate the spleen and expelling dampness, such as yam, lotus seeds, etc.; avoid sitting for a long time and exercise regularly.

DAMP-HEAT TYPE

Medium or thin body, oily face, prone to acne, often feel bitter mouth, dry mouth, heavy limbs, weakness, easily upset and irritable. Not very well adaptable to wet, heavy, or high-temperature environments.

The tongue is red with a yellow greasy coating

Sticky stool or constipated

 

Remedy suggestion: Avoid alcohol and seafood, consume more fruits and vegetables with clear heat, such as cucumber, mung bean, bitter gourd, etc.; it is not advisable to stay up late and overwork.

BLOOD STASIS TYPE

Dull face complexion and lips, freckles, lackluster, and/or rough skin. Emotionally fretful and forgetful. Susceptible to pain condition and sensitive to a cold environment.

The tongue consists of dark-spot

 

Remedy suggestion: Eat foods that promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, such as brown sugar, rose tea, etc.; do more activities that promote heart blood vessels, such as dancing, health massage, etc.

QI STAGNATION TYPE

Tend to have a thin body, depressed mood, often feel something stuck in their throat, emotionally fragile, and sensitive. Often feel swelling and pain in the upper respiratory area and two flanks around the ribcage, frequent sighing, palpitation, stomachache, and/or insomnia. Sensitive to stress, especially during winter, autumn, and rainy days.

The tongue is pale red with a thin white coating.

 

Remedy suggestion: Consume more qi-promoting foods, such as leeks, garlic, etc.; do more exercise to maintain qi and blood circulation.

SPECIAL CONSTITUTION TYPE

Tends to have allergies, such as asthma, urticarial, eczema, hay fever, drug allergy, etc. Poor adaptation to changes in the external environment.

 

Remedy suggestion: This constitution type is more complicated and should remedy accordingly.
